The Hitching Post – A California Central Coast Tradition

I went out to dinner with friends last night at the Hitching Post in Casmalia. And despite it being the day after Christmas, it was packed. I hadn’t been out there in awhile. It is true that we take for granted things that are right here under our noses. The Hitching Post has a national reputation and a rich history here on the Central Coast. For those who don’t care to go off the beaten path, you can chow down at the Hitching Post 2, located right off the 101 in Buellton. This was the location featured in the movie “Sideways.” But those with a pioneering spirit, who want an authentic old town California experience, will venture out to the abandoned stage coach and railroad outpost known as Casmalia.

There isn’t much in Casmalia except the Hitching Post, but at night it emerges out of the pitch black darkness and it is hopping. Primarily, the Hitching Post is known for its beef, which is truly exceptional. I ordered the Filet Mignon, medium rare. I’m not a medium rare person, but good beef deserves exception. It simply melts in your mouth. It was even delicious this morning with a couple over medium eggs. Also, our table ordered the barbequed artichoke which is also Hitching Post favorite, and it was excellent. Due to our proximity to well known wineries and vineyards, the wine list is a stand out as well. But, mostly you can’t beat the atmosphere. Take Betteravia west, keep going and don’t look back. The Hitching Post is truly a short hop from Vandenberg AFB, Lompoc, and Santa Maria, and it is a Central Coast tradition.
